“They received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” (NASB)
The Clever Steward (What Am I To Do?) is a reflective song inspired by Jesus’ challenging parable of the unrighteous steward in Luke 16:1–13. Told through shifting voices—the wealthy master, the dismissed manager, and one who benefits from the manager’s scheme—the lyric allows the unsettling tension of the story to be heard: clever self-interest can appear to succeed, and temporary riches can look like security.
But the song ultimately turns to Jesus’ central warning. Faithfulness in small things reveals the condition of the heart, and no one can serve two masters. Earthly resources, approval, and advantage are temporary; God sees the heart, judges righteously, and calls His people to undivided allegiance.
The repeated question, “What am I to do?” becomes a personal confession and a final resolve: I cannot compromise in faith.
