“They received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” (NASB)
How Long is a prayer-shaped song for seasons when violence, injustice, or personal suffering make God’s work difficult to see. Drawing on the movement of Habakkuk, it begins with an honest cry—“How long?”—and turns toward confidence that God remains sovereign, sees evil clearly, and will bring righteous judgment in his appointed time.
The song holds together lament, patience, and hope: those who sow injustice will not evade God’s justice, while those who wait on him are called to keep walking by faith. Its closing plea, “Remember mercy,” echoes Habakkuk’s prayer as the singer looks to God for strength and deliverance. See Habakkuk 1:2–4; 2:3–4; 3:2, 17–19; Galatians 6:7–9.
