I see in Genesis 1 that God created the world and everything in it, including humanity, and He saw that his creation was very good (Genesis 1:31). God does not make mistakes. Although we sin, God has made provision for our sins through the sending and sacrifice of his Son. His purposes are wise and good, because they come from the perfect wisdom and goodness of the Creator. We are blessed because God created us in his goodness and has shown his love supremely by sending Jesus.
It is amazing to me that God loves me, because he truly knows my wavering heart. He proved his love by sending his Son as the propitiation for my sin, even though I was unworthy of his sacrifice. Romans 5:6–8 says that Christ died for the ungodly while we were still helpless and that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
The Bible teaches that our love is a response to God’s prior love: “We love, because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). In context, John also teaches that love for God is expressed in love for others (1 John 4:20–21). I can love God and love others only because He first loved me and, by grace, continues to prune and shape me. God the Father is the vinedresser, Jesus is the true vine, and I am grateful to be a branch in him (John 15:1–5).
1. What biblical images best describe my relationship with God—Creator and creature, Master and servant, Father and child, Friend, or Beloved? How does each image help me understand God and my relationship to him?
2. Jesus says that the Father prunes fruitful branches so that they may bear more fruit (John 15:1–2). Where do I see God growing, correcting, strengthening, or shaping me to become more like Christ?
3. Jesus calls his disciples to let their light shine before others so that they may see their good works and glorify the Father (Matthew 5:14–16). When have I seen God’s grace at work through me in a way that benefited another person or pointed them toward him?
4. Romans 5:6–8 says that Christ died for us while we were helpless and sinful, and 1 John 4:19 says, “We love, because He first loved us.” How does God’s prior love shape the way I love him and love others?
5. When I experience doubt, what helps me return to the truth that God’s love is shown in Christ rather than earned by my worthiness or sustained by the strength of my feelings?
